Designing for a Curved Can: What Flat Artwork Gets Wrong

Can artwork is designed flat and printed curved. Most of the problems in beverage packaging design come from that single gap.
A standard 330ml can is roughly 66mm across and 115mm tall. Unrolled, the printable area is about 200mm wide — but the customer never sees 200mm. From any single viewpoint they see slightly less than half of it, and the edges of that view are compressed almost to nothing.
The visible face is smaller than you think
Stand a can on a shelf and the usable front is around 90–100mm wide. Beyond that, the curve turns away fast. Type placed at the edges does not just look narrower — it becomes unreadable at a normal viewing distance.
The practical consequence: your brand name, product name, and flavour need to live inside a central band roughly half the width of the artwork. Everything outside that is supporting information — ingredients, volume, barcode, legal text.
Designers who lay out a can like a flat label routinely lose their most important element off the side of the curve.
What the curve does to specific elements
Horizontal type compresses toward the edges and stays readable longest in the centre. Wide-set letterforms survive better than condensed ones.
Vertical type running up the can is barely affected by the curve, which is why so many beverage brands use it. It is a genuine structural advantage, not just a style choice.
Circular logos become ellipses. A perfectly round mark reads as a squashed oval unless it sits dead centre.
Straight horizontal lines stay straight. Straight vertical lines stay straight. Diagonals do not — they bend, and a design built on strong diagonal geometry will look subtly wrong in a way that is hard to diagnose from a flat file.
Seams, tops, and the parts you cannot use
The neck of the can tapers over the top 15mm or so, and the base has a rolled edge. Neither takes artwork reliably. On shrink-sleeve cans there is also an overlap seam, usually placed at the back, where the artwork joins itself — any pattern crossing it needs to align or it will visibly break.
Budget for this at layout stage rather than discovering it at proof.
Colour on aluminium
Metal is not white. Unless a base coat is applied, printed colour sits on a reflective silver surface and shifts — pastels go metallic, and light colours lose density.
Many brands use this deliberately, leaving areas unprinted so the raw aluminium shows through. It looks premium and costs nothing extra. But it only works if the design was planned for it; discovering it accidentally at press means reprinting.
Checking the design on an actual cylinder
Everything above is invisible in a flat artboard. A design that looks balanced as a rectangle can lose its logo around the curve, break a diagonal, or push the flavour name into the compressed zone — and you will not see any of it until the artwork is mapped onto a cylinder.
That mapping is the whole reason can mockups exist, and it is where most free templates fall short: a flat image pasted onto a can shape is not the same as a proper cylindrical projection with correct distortion.
